Outdoor Carpentry: Decks, Fences & Pergolas for Putnam County Homes

Outdoor carpentry adds structure, function, and value to your property. Here's what to know before building or repairing a deck, fence, or pergola in our area.

Outdoor carpentry adds structure, function, and value to a property. A deck, fence, or pergola can extend your living space and frame a landscape — but only if it's built to hold up to our Northeast seasons. Good outdoor carpentry is about more than lumber; it's proper fasteners, correct spacing, solid footings, and finishes that resist rot.

Set posts below the frost line

In our region, footings have to be set below the frost line or structures heave and shift over winter. Posts set too shallow will lift with the freeze-thaw cycle, leaving decks, fences, and pergolas out of level after a single season. We set footings to the correct depth so structures stay stable from the start.

Use the right fasteners

The wrong fasteners are the most common cause of premature failure in outdoor woodwork. Standard fasteners react with treated lumber and leave dark streaks, or rust and fail outright. Galvanized and stainless fasteners prevent that staining and rot so the work stays sound for years.

Choosing the right material

  • Pressure-treated lumber — durable and economical for ground-contact framing
  • Cedar — naturally rot-resistant with a refined look for visible surfaces
  • Composite decking — low maintenance and long-lasting for high-use decks
  • Concrete footings below frost line for posts and structural elements

Build new or repair what's there?

We do both. If an existing deck or fence is structurally sound but tired, resurfacing and replacing boards can add years of life. If footings or framing have failed, a rebuild is usually the better path. Either way, we match new work to existing construction so additions don't look patched in.
